Feeding Instructions

A nutritious diet is part of maintaining your pet’s long-term health. We recommend the following feeding tips to help keep your pet happy and healthy.*

If Feeding Puppies, Lactating & Gestating Females: Puppies start to nibble on solid food at 3 to 4 weeks of age. We recommend moistening dry food with warm water or Solid Gold canned food through weaning (6 to 8 weeks of age). Maintain your puppy’s ideal body condition. Appetite changes are normal with most puppies. Lactating/gestating females may need two to three times more food than shown in the table.

*Feeding amounts are guidelines only and may vary based on activity level, health condition, life stage, and temperature. Additional foods, treats and chews may alter this balance.

  • Follow the feeding chart above (we recommend splitting this into two meals per day).

  • Serve food dry or with some water to increase aroma for your pet.

  • Be sure to offer fresh, clean water daily.

  • Schedule an annual veterinary check-up for your pet.

Picky pants eater and touchy tummy no more!
I have a rescued 4 year old Husky. In the 1.5 years that Eddie has been part of our family we have gone through many battles with him regarding food and getting him to eat. Eddie would eat for a while and then refuse to touch the same food ever again. Nothing was determined to be medically wrong and no known allergies so we were at the end of our rope begging him to eat and actually cooking for him. One day one of the dog trainers we are friendly with recommended barking at the moon for him mixed with a teaspoon of your canned food with tripe. It is amazing the change this food has brought about in meal time. Eddie eats with enthusiasm and will lick the bowl clean. He has even more energy if that is possible. Please don't ever discontinue this version within your brand!!

Absolutely amazing
I have a French Bulldog who had a horrible yeast ear infection that was not only painful for her but $500 every time I took her to the vet. Since I switched to Solid Gold, she has not had a yeast ear infection in 6 months, she's happier, she's not suffering and I am saving $500 a month! I've done nothing new except switch her food to Solid Gold!
Thanks so much for sharing your story, Maria! We're thrilled to hear that your Frenchie is thriving on our food!

Wonderful for Performance Dogs
At 9 years, my Corgi was diagnosed with Leukemia. Her vet suggested altering her diet to include much more protein to help fight the disease & work in concert with the meds. Barking at the Moon was mixed with Hund und Flocken (her kibble from birth). I feel sure that her 7 year remission was due not only to meds, but her increased healthy protein through this food. My second Corgi is a performance competitor also, as was the older girl. This food is loaded with all the nutrients that are needed for the active training and competitions that she enjoys. I am an 18 year believer in Solid Gold foods. Your brand is number 1 in my book. Thank you Solid Gold, for keeping my four footed family members well fed!
Thanks so much for the love and support, Patricia! We're thrilled to hear that your four-legged family has thrived on Solid Gold for so many years, and we hope the trend continues for many years to come!

Amazing Food!
This food is outstanding! My Agility dog, who is a high energy Shetland Sheepdog, goes nuts over this food! She was very picky about food earlier in life, now she gobbles this up as fast as she can. I am very pleased with the quality of this food. I am always getting complements on her coat, and her teeth too! Her stools always look great and she still acts like a puppy at almost 6 years old. I am also very happy that it doesn't break the bank. Thank you Solid Gold!
We're so thrilled to hear that you and your Sheltie are loving life on Solid Gold! It sounds like she is quite the free spirit, and we're happy that you have found a food that you both love!

Great for Dogs With Special Dietary Needs
After years of feeding Solid Gold to my cats, this was my " go to" brand when I brought my borzoi puppy home. I talked to many breeders, and given that borzois are prone to bloat, the general concensus was raw or grain free. The raw diet is not practical for my lifestyle, so I went with Solid Gold's grain-free Barking at the Moon. He had absolutely no problems switching from the food the breeders had him on to Solid Gold. His stool has been consistently solid, and the vet said he is right on target in his growth. I am very pleased with this food. The smell is a little fishy but it doesn't seem to leave him with bad breath. I do wish you still vacuum sealed your bags though.
We're glad that Solid Gold has won the hearts—and appetites—of the entire family! Thanks so much for sharing! We hope your Borzoi pup continues to grow into a big, healthy boy!

Best dog food I've ever used!
I had a rescue Rottweiler whose coat was in horrible condition when I got her because of a corn based diet. I did some research and decided to try grain free. Barking At The Moon came highly recommended by my dog trainer, so we gave it a try. Within a month her dandruff was gone and her coat was beautiful. Even though she's since passed away, my 3 dogs still eat it and are gorgeous as a result. My only suggestion to people would be to carefully follow the feeding guidelines. Dogs need to eat less of this food because it is so high in protein.
Becky, Thank you so much for sharing your story. We're proud to have been able to help improve the life of your Rottweiler, and happy to hear that you're still feeding your dogs Barking at the Moon all these years later. We truly appreciate your loyalty and support. Best Wishes, The Solid Gold Team

Barking at the Moon
My 75 lb. yellow Lab has eaten Barking at the Moon for about 5 years. He is highly allergic, and the old formula of fish meal, beef and potato worked for him. I'm concerned about the change in formula. He is highly allergic to eggs, and I see that egg is listed as one of the main ingredients. I usually buy the largest bag available, but this time I bought a medium bag to give it a try. Please give me advice on what I could feed him. He is allergic to egg, chicken, pork, rice and oats. I want the old formula back!!!!!
With the new packaging, very little of the Barking at the Moon formula changed. We added probiotics, l-carnitine (an amino acid that helps burn fat and build muscle), and updated vitamin/mineral premix and improved “Superfoods” premix (the fruits, veggies, and herbs). Eggs have always been a part of Barking at the Moon. They were in the ingredient panel but not called out on the front of the bag before. If your Lab was fine on the “old” Barking at the Moon formula, which included egg, he should have no problems with the new formula.
